Helping Children Deal with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Yesterday, I saw a little girl that survived the earthquake in Haiti.  One year later after the earthquake, she is just beginning to show signs of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  Did you know that most people who experience trauma do not show signs of PTSD until a year later? This is ironic, since most of the aid, media attention, and charity work focuses on getting help to people immediately after a disaster.  So when signs of emotional distress pop up a year later, family members don’t often suspect PTSD.  If you or someone you love has experienced trauma of any sort, visit the National Child Traumatic Stress Network website. This website has a wealth of information. Log on to  www.nctsnet.org.
